The Globally Harmonized System of Chemical Classification (GHS) uses a common and consistent approach to labeling and classifying chemical hazards to better unify chemical standards and classifications across the world for increased safety in international commerce.

GHS harmonization regulations include:

  • Uniform classification of substances and chemicals according to physical, health, and environmental hazards
  • Hazard communication that incorporates harmonized labels and safety data sheets
  • A target audience that must include consumers, workers and emergency responders

Upon implementation, OSHA’s Hazard Communication System will adopt the label provision of the GHS for harmonized pictograms, hazard statements, and signal words, meaning employers will have to update their current RTK labels. It will also change the way they identify the chemical, supplier and precautionary information. The information on a GHS label includes:

  • Pictograms
  • Signal Words
  • Hazard Statements - Classified by their physical, health, and environmental hazards
  • Precautionary statements and pictograms
  • Product Identifier
  • Supplier Identification

OSHA plans to finalize and implement GHS in the United States sometime after 2012. Fully compliant GHS labels will be available for all DuraLabel printers prior to the establishment of GHS in the U.S.
